Wheat and flour prices surge across Pakistan

Wheat and flour prices are rising across Pakistan, placing significant financial pressure on consumers. In Karachi, wheat prices in wholesale markets have climbed from Rs90 to Rs132 per kilogram over the last four months. Consequently, the price of a 50kg flour bag has reached as high as Rs8,000 in some regions.

Retail prices for various flour types have also increased. Fine flour is selling for up to Rs175 per kilogram, while chakki flour has reached Rs180 per kilogram. Flour millers report difficulties in maintaining operations because they must purchase expensive wheat while being forced to sell flour at government-fixed rates.

Industry experts and officials have attributed the surge to wheat deregulation, the removal of support prices, and alleged hoarding. While Pakistan produces approximately 30 million tonnes of wheat annually, domestic consumption is estimated at 31 million tonnes. The Wholesale Grocery Association noted that a planned import of 750,000 tonnes through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan may be insufficient to meet demand, especially as imported wheat is not expected until November. Additionally, poor storage facilities and inadequate warehousing continue to impact the quality and export value of the domestic crop.
