Wheat harvest begins in Rio Grande do Sul amid lower yields

The wheat harvest has officially commenced in Cruz Alta, Rio Grande do Sul. Projections from Emater/RS-Ascar estimate a state production of approximately 2.2 million tons from 763,000 hectares, representing a decrease compared to 2025. Nationally, Conab expects Brazil's production to reach 5.73 million tons in 2026, down from 7.87 million tons the previous year, due to reduced planted areas and changes in average yields.

Climatic factors, including frequent rains and insufficient sunlight, have impacted crop maturation and harvesting rhythms. These conditions also necessitate increased attention to plant health and commercialization standards.

In a broader economic context, agricultural experts note that while the sector continues to drive GDP growth, producers face significant financial vulnerabilities. Challenges include high debt levels, elevated interest rates, and credit restrictions, which are compounded by the need for financial strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
