Wheat Prices Drop as Oil Holds and Gold Rises

European wheat prices fell to €226 a tonne on Wednesday, down from a week‑high of €245. In the United States, wheat futures slipped to $6.64 per bushel. The decline follows a month of sharp price gains driven by heatwaves, Middle‑East conflict and disruptions in the Black Sea, prompting profit‑taking at month‑end.

Oil prices remained firm, with Brent climbing 0.47% to $89.64 a barrel and WTI up 1.07% to $83.36. Precious metals rallied as investors sought safety, lifting gold 1.73% to $4,077.42 an ounce and silver about 4%. Analysts note hopes for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and Black Sea navigation, though no concrete progress has been announced. Morocco extended its wheat import tax, Turkey expects a strong harvest, and India opened export quotas in May, positioning alternative supplies for the market.

Overall, cereal markets corrected while energy and safe‑haven assets stayed resilient amid lingering geopolitical uncertainty.
