Wheat prices hit three-year high amid Black Sea export fears
Wheat prices have surged to their highest levels in three years, driven by escalating tensions in the Black Sea region. Market volatility has seen prices rise approximately 19 percent during August, fueled by fears that Russia will intensify attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure following a breakdown in peace negotiations.
Russia and Ukraine together account for between 25 percent and 30 percent of global wheat exports. Recent military actions against ports and grain terminals have severely disrupted supply chains. Ukraine reported exporting only 500,000 tons of wheat in August, representing about 20 percent of its typical monthly capacity. Similarly, Russian wheat exports have seen significant declines, falling from a monthly average of five million tons to two million tons.
These disruptions threaten global food security, particularly in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, which rely heavily on these low-cost suppliers. As Black Sea routes become increasingly hazardous, importers are turning to more distant and expensive alternatives in regions such as Australia and Argentina.
