Wheat prices surge as Ukraine war diplomatic efforts stall

Global wheat prices are surging due to ongoing disruptions in Black Sea grain shipments caused by the war between Russia and Ukraine. Chicago wheat futures have climbed significantly, recently trading near $7.38 per bushel, driven by concerns that diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict have failed to produce a breakthrough.

Recent diplomatic missions by U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy did not result in concrete agreements to resume large-scale grain exports. Consequently, reciprocal strikes on port infrastructure and vessel attacks have reduced Black Sea shipments by more than 40% compared to the previous year.

The supply crunch is further exacerbated by drought conditions across the Northern Hemisphere. While Ukraine has nearly completed its 2026 wheat harvest, producing approximately 24.91 million metric tons, the logistical challenges of moving grain through damaged ports and contested shipping lanes remain severe. This volatility poses significant food security risks for nations in North Africa and the Middle East that rely heavily on these imports.
