Whisper project retrofits Maria Topic with wind and solar technology

The Whisper project, an EU-funded initiative aimed at reducing commercial shipping emissions, has successfully completed the retrofit of the Ultramax bulk carrier Maria Topic. Operated by the Trieste-based shipowner Ant, the vessel is now returning to commercial service following sea trials.

The retrofit integrates two primary green technologies: OceanWings' adjustable rigid sails and Solbian solar panels. The OceanWings system uses wind power to assist propulsion, reducing the load on the main engine and lowering fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, the Solbian solar panels provide renewable electricity for onboard services, decreasing reliance on auxiliary power generators.

Beyond its commercial role, the Maria Topic will serve as a testbed to collect data on how modular technologies can be integrated into existing fleets without compromising maritime safety, reliability, or operational flexibility.
