DOJ whistleblower alleges political bias in Ivy League antisemitism probes

A whistleblower complaint filed by former Department of Justice (DOJ) attorney Haley Van Erem alleges that the Trump administration's investigations into antisemitism at Ivy League universities were politically motivated and predetermined. The 25-page disclosure, submitted to various inspectors general and members of Congress, claims that the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism bypassed standard investigative procedures and ignored evidence to pressure institutions into costly settlements.

According to the complaint, the administration sought to freeze federal research funding and force settlements from schools including Harvard, Brown, and Columbia. Columbia reportedly agreed to a $221 million settlement, while Brown committed $50 million to Rhode Island workforce development. The whistleblower also alleges that the task force targeted Muslim professors and that career investigators were overruled by political appointees.

In response, a DOJ spokesperson stated the department “stands behind the integrity of these investigations.” Meanwhile, Representative Jamie Raskin has launched an investigation into the allegations, characterizing the probes as a “pre-baked frame-up operation.” Separately, a federal judge recently dismissed a DOJ lawsuit against Harvard, ruling that the administration's allegations were based on incidents that were “too isolated and episodic” to prove a violation of civil rights law.
