Whitby to Replace Iconic Whale Bone Arch with Bronze Structure

Whitby’s landmark whale bone arch, installed in 2002 after a gift from its twin town Barrow in Alaska, has deteriorated from coastal exposure. North Yorkshire Council conducted a detailed appraisal and selected bronze replicas as the long‑term solution. The new bronze arch will replicate the original’s appearance and scale, cost £70,000, and is expected to be installed early next year after the existing bones are removed in September.

Council executive member for open to business Councillor Mark Crane said the bronze arch will preserve the town’s maritime heritage while withstanding harsh weather. Town Mayor Councillor Sandra Turner added that the replacement will ensure the landmark remains a focal point for residents and visitors. The original bones will be gifted to the University of York for research, with a portion displayed at Whitby Museum.
