Whitby whale bone arch removed for bronze replica replacement

The whale bone arch in Whitby, a prominent landmark in North Yorkshire, has been removed to prepare for its replacement with a bronze replica. The original arch was gifted in 2002 by the town’s twin, Barrow, Alaska, but has deteriorated after 24 years of exposure to North Sea winds.

North Yorkshire Council decided on a bronze replica following an appraisal of various options. The new structure is expected to cost £70,000 and is scheduled for installation early next year. While some residents called for sourcing another natural whale jaw bone, officials stated that the bronze version provides an ethical alternative that aligns with modern conservation values while preserving the town’s maritime heritage.
