White Abarrio retirement considered after Whitney defeat

The future of racehorse White Abarrio is under consideration for retirement following a disappointing last-place finish in the Grade 1 $1 million Whitney at Saratoga. The 7-year-old, a 2023 Breeders' Cup Classic winner, finished last of seven runners in the event.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. stated that while no final decision has been made, the horse's recent performances—including a fourth-place finish in the Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs—have led owners to consider a move to stud. Joseph noted that while the horse appeared physically healthy during post-race checks, White Abarrio exhibited abnormal coughing following the race.

White Abarrio, owned by C Two Racing Stable, Gary Barber, and La Milagrosa Stable, enters this period with a career record of 11 wins in 28 starts and earnings exceeding $8.5 million. Joseph emphasized the need to observe the horse over the coming days before deciding whether to conclude his racing career.
