White Cars Have Lowest Accident Risk, Study Shows

A study by Monash University examined nearly one million vehicle crashes over 17 years and found that white cars have the smallest chance of being involved in an accident. Compared with black vehicles, white cars were 12 % less likely to be hit, and they also performed better than gray, silver, blue and red cars, which showed risk increases of 11 %, 10 %, 7 % and 7 % respectively.

The research, cited by Kelley Blue Book, attributes the safety advantage to higher visibility of light‑coloured vehicles, especially at night. Jake McKenzie, a content analyst at Genuine Parts Company, explained that “white cars are much easier to see than dark‑coloured cars,” a factor that also reduces theft rates.

These findings suggest that choosing a light‑coloured vehicle, particularly white, can improve road safety for drivers in the Netherlands and elsewhere.
