White Clothing Yellowing Explained: Causes and Storage Tips

White garments can develop yellow stains when stored for long periods. The discoloration is primarily caused by oxidation and chemical reactions with residues from detergents, fabric softeners, deodorants, sweat, and environmental contaminants such as nicotine, e‑cigarette vapor, kitchen grease, and acids released by wooden drawers, cardboard boxes, or certain plastics.

To prevent yellowing, garments should be washed thoroughly and fully dried before being placed in storage. Excess detergent and fabric softener should be avoided, and hands must be clean and dry when handling the clothes. Wooden surfaces should be painted, sealed, or lined with cotton muslin or tissue paper to block natural acids. Cardboard boxes are discouraged, while breathable cotton storage bags or polypropylene‑based plastic containers are recommended. Proper ventilation and keeping storage areas away from kitchens or smoking zones further reduce the risk of staining.
