White Cross Project brings South African farm attack awareness to Washington D.C
The White Cross Project, an initiative by the South African organization Lex Libertas, has placed 3,000 white crosses on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The display aims to draw international attention to farm attacks, rural safety, and property rights in South Africa.
While campaigners and some commentators describe the situation as a threat to white Afrikaners, South Africa’s ambassador to Washington, Roelf Meyer, has denied assertions of genocide against the group. Official police statistics from the South African Police Service (SAPS) indicate that farm murders constitute a small proportion of the country’s total murder figures; for example, between April and June 2026, SAPS recorded one farm murder compared to 5,427 total murders nationally.
The project is linked to broader calls for decentralization and self-governance reforms in South Africa. Additionally, reports indicate that the United States has admitted a significant number of South African refugees during the 2026 fiscal year.
