White Doves: Rarity, Genetics and Symbolic Meaning

White doves that appear at weddings, funerals and other ceremonies are often thought of as rare, but most are domesticated rock pigeons selectively bred for a pure‑white plumage. Naturally occurring white birds are extremely uncommon and typically result from genetic conditions such as albinism or leucism, which are found only in a few species and are vulnerable to disease and predation.

Beyond biology, white doves have long served as symbols of peace and purity. In Christian tradition the dove represents the Holy Spirit, most famously described at Jesus’ baptism when “the Spirit of God descended like a dove.” This biblical image has shaped religious art, literature and contemporary interpretations of dove symbolism.

The practice of releasing white doves raises ethical concerns: many birds do not survive in the wild, and the mass breeding of domestic pigeons can affect humane treatment standards. Alternatives such as symbolic gestures or using non‑living representations are increasingly discussed.
