White Horse launches Japan-exclusive whisky for food pairing

Kirin Brewery is launching ‘White Horse Nagomi’, a Japan-exclusive blended Scotch whisky, on September 1. Owned by Diageo, the brand is currently the top-selling imported Scotch whisky in Japan.

Developed over two years, the new product is specifically designed to pair with Japanese cuisine. It aims to complement flavors such as dashi, soy sauce, and various seasonings, as well as the fats found in fish and meat. Preliminary feedback from 15 Japanese chefs suggests the whisky enhances the umami of ingredients without overpowering the meal.

A consumer survey conducted by Kirin Brewery involving 1,030 individuals revealed that while the average weekday dinner lasts only 35 minutes, over 80% of respondents desire this time to be a period of relaxation. The study also found that while 70% of people believe beverage pairing affects meal satisfaction, approximately 80% tend to stick to the same type of alcohol, indicating a potential market for new pairing experiences.
