White House Accord signed by tech leaders on AI safety

President Donald Trump and leaders of major technology companies have signed the ‘White House Accord on Superintelligence Joint Commitment on Frontier SI Responsibility’. The voluntary agreement establishes a framework for companies developing advanced artificial intelligence to implement internal controls, independent audits, and board-level oversight.

The accord outlines multiple layers of safeguards designed to ensure AI systems operate safely. These include internal risk reviews, the empowerment of internal teams to monitor model alignment, and the use of external evaluators to assess effectiveness. Oversight will also be elevated to corporate boards, which will designate independent committees to review audit reports and address identified issues. The safeguards specifically target risks related to cybersecurity, biosecurity, and chemical threats, as well as preventing unintended system access.

While the agreement does not establish legally enforceable standards or a government regulator, President Trump described the commitment as ‘morally binding’ and noted that the industry would largely engage in self-policing. Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the movement is ‘historic and consequential,’ noting that companies are adopting processes similar to financial controls used by major corporations. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg added that the goal is to assure the public that products will operate as intended through robust internal controls.
