India hockey teams win Asian Games gold and Olympic qualification
India's national hockey teams achieved historic success at the 2026 Asian Games, with both the men's and women's squads securing gold medals and direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The women's team claimed their first continental title in 44 years by defeating defending champions China 1-0 in the final. Lalremsiami scored the decisive goal in the 10th minute, supported by critical saves from goalkeeper Savita Punia.
The men's team successfully defended their title with a 5-1 victory over Malaysia. Goals from captain Harmanpreet Singh, Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh, and Shilanand Lakra secured the win. This victory marks the first time the Indian men have won consecutive Asian Games gold medals.
Following the victories, veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh noted that early Olympic qualification provides the team with essential preparation time ahead of the 2028 Games.
