White House ballroom construction halted by federal judge

A federal judge has issued an injunction to halt construction of a multi-million dollar ballroom at the White House, ruling that the project requires explicit congressional authorization. While the aesthetic renovation is paused, Judge Richard Leon allowed work on an underlying military bunker to continue to ensure executive security.

The administration has defended the project by claiming the ballroom serves as a protective shell for a high-security underground complex designed to defend against modern threats like drone strikes. However, former White House insiders have challenged this necessity, stating that a massive, fully functional underground facility was already completed during the Obama administration and remains capable of providing full protection.

The project, which involved the demolition of the White House East Wing, faces additional opposition from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Preservationists argue the scale of the expansion threatens the architectural integrity of the historic site. The White House is currently appealing the injunction.
