White House ballroom project faces scrutiny over costs and security claims

President Donald Trump is facing scrutiny over the construction of a ballroom and military complex on the White House grounds. While Trump has claimed via social media that the project is being funded by private companies and will cost taxpayers “ZERO Dollars,” critics and lawmakers dispute this figure. Senate Republicans and political figures have suggested the cost to taxpayers could reach as high as $1 billion.

Trump has defended the project as a vital national security necessity. However, former officials argue that the security justification is undermined by the existence of a pre-existing, nuclear-proof secret bunker located 60 feet below street level. This bunker, commissioned after the 9/11 attacks, includes a private elevator, independent air supply, and a month’s supply of food.

A White House spokesperson stated that the East Wing Modernization Project is “inextricably tied to the security of the president” and the White House grounds.
