Donald Trump returns to White House Correspondents' Dinner, teases 2028 presidential run

The annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, originally cancelled after a gunman opened fire at the Washington Hilton in April, was rescheduled for July 24 at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C., with a reduced attendance of about 700 guests and heightened security.

President Donald Trump attended and delivered a roughly hour‑long speech. He opened with, “As I said three months ago, the show must go on,” and proceeded to mock the press, calling the assembled journalists “the largest group of people with anti‑Trump syndrome ever assembled.” He attacked several reporters and political figures, praised a Secret Service agent wounded in the April attack, and repeatedly joked about running again, saying, “The second time is always better and the third time will be better yet,” and later proclaiming his intention to seek a fourth term, while wearing a red “Trump 2028” cap.

Trump also referenced the April shooting as “an assault on our democracy,” highlighted the upgraded security measures, and claimed the event demonstrated resilience. Although the U.S. Constitution limits presidents to two terms, his comments sparked discussion about a possible 2028 candidacy.
