White House criticizes NYC sanctuary policies after ICE shooting

The White House has criticized New York City’s sanctuary and bail policies, linking them to violent crime and preventable deaths. White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis stated that “radical Democrat politicians must stop releasing criminal illegal aliens from jails into our communities,” arguing that these policies prioritize criminals over American citizens.

The administration is defending ICE agents who shot Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old Dominican migrant with a criminal record, during an arrest attempt in the Bronx. Belgal, who allegedly entered the U.S. illegally around 2022, was involved in a pursuit where agents fired at his vehicle. Border czar Tom Homan defended the agents, stating they “performed exactly as they were trained” because Belgal attempted to run an officer over.

Officials cited Belgal’s case alongside others, such as the suspects accused in the stabbing of off-duty NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes, to argue that local authorities' refusal to cooperate with immigration enforcement allows dangerous individuals to remain in the community.
