White House helipad construction completed after redesign

President Donald Trump has announced the completion of a newly redesigned helipad at the White House. The project was specifically modified at the president's direction to better accommodate Marine One operations.

The construction followed the removal of a temporary structure used for a June event on the South Lawn. The project underwent a significant redesign in August after Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the initial work, requesting that the landing area appear level despite the natural slope of the lawn. This required contractors to dismantle previously installed granite sections, including parts of the presidential seal.

The approximately 100-foot-wide platform is constructed using four-inch granite sourced from California. Trump noted that while former President Dwight D. Eisenhower did not require a dedicated helipad for his helicopter travel in 1957, the current administration requires the facility.

Lockheed Martin, the parent company of Sikorsky Aircraft, stated it contributed to the project's estimated $5 million to $6 million cost through a payment to the National Park Service, noting the contribution complied with all applicable laws and regulations.
