White House renovation faces scrutiny over existing nuclear bunker

The Trump administration is moving forward with a $400 million to $600 million project to construct a new ballroom and modernize the White House East Wing. While the administration argues the project is essential for national security and presidential protection, former officials claim the justification is undermined by an existing underground facility.

Reports indicate that a highly fortified, secret bunker was completed during the Barack Obama administration. Located approximately 60 feet (18 meters) below the White House complex, the facility was designed to withstand a nuclear blast and can accommodate dozens of people for several weeks during national security emergencies.

Despite previous judicial orders to halt construction due to a lack of Congressional approval, the Supreme Court has granted permission for the administration to proceed with the work in the short term. White House spokesperson Davis Engle defended the project, stating that the East Wing updates are inextricably linked to presidential security and the protection of White House infrastructure.
