White House Report Accuses Smithsonian of Ideological Capture

The White House Domestic Policy Council released a 162‑page report on July 4 2026 titled “Saving America’s Story: How Ideological Capture at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History Erases Our Heritage.” The report, issued under President Donald Trump’s March 2025 Executive Order 14253 – “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History” – alleges that the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (NMAH) has been taken over by radical activists who apply Marxist‑based intersectional critical theory to U.S. history.

According to the report, the museum’s leadership rewrote its mission, removed or down‑played exhibits on founding figures such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, and framed American history as a narrative of oppression and regret. It claims the institution uses taxpayer funds to promote this agenda, dividing Americans by race, gender, sexuality, immigration status and nationality, and undermining traditional interpretations of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The document calls for a reversal of these practices to restore “informed and honest patriotism.”
