White House UFC Freedom 250 event foiled drone plot, draws criticism

The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced that it had disrupted a plot to attack the UFC Freedom 250 mixed‑martial‑arts event staged on the South Lawn of the White House. Five men from Ohio, Missouri, Nebraska and California were arrested after investigators said the conspirators planned to use explosive‑laden drones and sniper rifles to cause mass casualties and to breach the White House complex during the event, which took place on June 14‑15, 2026.

The UFC event marked the United States' 250th anniversary and President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. It attracted more than 4,000 spectators on site, including senior officials such as Vice President JD Vance and cabinet members, with an additional 85,000 people watching from the nearby Ellipse park. Critics labeled the spectacle as a flamboyant, commercialized display that cheapened the dignity of the White House and was out of touch with economic concerns facing many Americans.

Security officials highlighted the growing threat posed by consumer drones, noting the successful joint operation among the FBI, the Justice Department and multiple state law‑enforcement agencies. The investigation continues as authorities examine further communications among the suspects.
