ICE nominee Lance Schroyer withdrawn by White House

The White House has withdrawn the nomination of Lance Schroyer to lead U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state trooper and senior adviser to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, was nominated by President Donald Trump in June.

The withdrawal follows a period of stagnation in the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Committee Chairman Senator Rand Paul had refused to schedule hearings for Schroyer until the Department of Homeland Security provided detailed information regarding internal investigations into fatal shootings involving ICE and Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis earlier this year.

Schroyer’s nomination had faced scrutiny due to his lack of prior experience leading a major law enforcement agency or working within ICE. The agency has not had a Senate-confirmed director since 2017 and is currently led by acting director David Venturella. The withdrawal leaves a critical leadership position vacant during a period of intensified immigration enforcement and mass deportation efforts.
