White magpies spotted near Williams Lake
A resident of Alexis Creek, Nicole Gallen, has reported multiple sightings of rare white magpies on her property west of Williams Lake. The first encounter occurred on July 7, when a single white bird was observed near her garden.
On August 9, Gallen confirmed the presence of two white magpies after observing them together eating crickets. Dr. Matt Reudink, a Professor of Biological Sciences at Thompson Rivers University, noted that such sightings are uncommon. He suggested the birds are likely leucistic, a condition where animals lack pigment, giving them a ghostly white or greyish appearance.
