Central Macedonia puppy dies after living with wild wolf pack

A white puppy that lived among a wild wolf pack in Central Macedonia, Greece, has died after approximately 40 to 50 days of documented coexistence. The unusual interaction was recorded by Dr. Theodoros Kominos, a zoology researcher at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, who observed the puppy playing with wolf cubs and following the pack as if it were a member.

According to researchers, the puppy's health declined rapidly due to severe exhaustion and diarrhea. The animal was found dead on August 6. Dr. Kominos addressed public criticism regarding the lack of intervention, explaining that attempting to rescue the puppy would have required a large-scale operation involving vehicles and veterinarians, which could have disturbed the entire wolf family, including six newborn cubs.

Furthermore, recent agricultural fires in the area had already caused the pack to move deeper into the vegetation, making a rescue mission difficult and potentially dangerous for both humans and animals. The cause of death remains unconfirmed, though possibilities include parasitic infection, bacterial illness, or the stresses of a wild environment.
