White River flooding causes historic damage in Indiana

Historic flooding along the White River has caused significant damage and displacement across parts of Indiana. In Hamilton County, the river reached a record crest of 24.6 feet, surpassing the previous 1913 record. The flooding affected over 200 properties in Carmel and displaced approximately 40 people.

Structural damage is a major concern, specifically regarding the Hazel Dell Parkway bridge between 96th and 106th streets. Officials report that floodwaters washed away fill materials behind the abutment, creating sinkholes and compromising the bridge's integrity. Engineers are currently assessing whether the structure requires repairs or a full replacement.

In Morgan County, specifically within Madison Township, floodwaters have left several roads impassable. Firefighters conducted rescues for individuals and pets trapped in vehicles attempting to navigate flooded routes. Authorities have warned residents that water can wash away soil beneath road surfaces, creating hidden hazards and dangerous currents.
