White Sands footprints confirm early human presence in North America
New research has confirmed that the oldest known human footprints in North America date back to the last Ice Age, specifically between 23,500 and 21,700 years ago. Located in White Sands National Park, New Mexico, these findings challenge previous archaeological consensus that humans migrated to the continent only 16,000 to 12,000 years ago.
Researchers from the University of Arizona utilized advanced laboratory methods at the United States Geological Survey Radiocarbon Laboratory to analyze hundreds of thousands of prehistoric pollen grains. This high-resolution dating allowed the team to reconstruct environmental conditions in 50-year increments. The data reveals that these prehistoric populations survived significant environmental shifts, including the shrinking of the Otero Lake and rising temperatures, as the landscape transitioned from marshy forests to drier plains.
