White-tailed deer activity patterns and feeding behaviors
White-tailed deer are crepuscular animals, meaning their activity levels peak during the low-light hours of dawn and dusk. During these periods, deer typically move between secluded bedding areas and primary food sources. While morning activity often involves deer returning to cover after nighttime feeding, evening activity increases as they emerge from bedding areas to forage.
Several environmental and biological factors influence these movement patterns. Temperature plays a role; for instance, at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, metabolic rates may be lower, potentially reducing the frequency of feeding compared to colder months when deer must consume more calories. Other critical factors include seasonal changes, food availability, weather conditions, hunting pressure, and the breeding season, or rut.
Deer do not follow a rigid schedule but rather utilize multiple feeding bouts throughout a 24-hour cycle. Their movement is also dictated by the need to conserve energy and avoid predators, often leading them to browse within secure cover before moving into more exposed agricultural fields or food plots.
