Whitetail deer dietary habits and seasonal food preferences

Whitetail deer are opportunistic herbivores with highly adaptable diets that shift based on seasonality, geographic location, and resource availability. To maintain health, a whitetail deer may need to consume approximately eight percent of its body weight in leafy greens and browse daily.

Dietary preferences change throughout the year:

• Spring: Deer seek fresh, tender vegetation, including new shoots, buds, grasses, forbs, and emerging agricultural crops like soybeans and corn.

• Summer: An abundance of food allows for diversification, including various legumes, fruits such as berries and apples, and continued consumption of agricultural crops.

• Autumn: Deer prioritize high-energy foods to build fat reserves for winter. Acorns are a primary food source during this season, alongside beechnuts, hickory nuts, and standing agricultural crops.

• Winter: Food availability becomes more challenging as deer rely on available browse and remaining vegetation.

Understanding these patterns is essential for wildlife management, hunting strategies, and mitigating crop or garden damage caused by deer.
