Whittier cruise pier declared a total loss after major fire

The pier at the Chugach Glacier Creek Cruise Terminal in Whittier, Alaska, has been declared a total loss following a major fire on September 14, 2026. The terminal, which opened in 2024 and was operated by the Huna Totem Corporation, suffered significant damage, with approximately 70 percent of the wooden decking destroyed.

The fire originated on the catamaran excursion boat ‘Klondike Express’ while it was docked at the pier. Although the Norwegian Jade was moored nearby at the time, the ship suffered no damage and departed the area to ensure the safety of its passengers and crew. No injuries were reported.

Firefighting efforts faced complications due to non-functional hydrants at the pier and a lack of direct seawater access, requiring water to be transported from downtown via fire trucks and tankers. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire and are reviewing whether the facility was constructed in compliance with fire safety regulations. The destruction of the pier may impact cruise ship operations and docking schedules for the 2027 Alaska season.
