WHO aims to declare end of Hanta virus outbreak on July 2

The World Health Organization said it expects to announce the official end of the Hanta virus outbreak on 2 July, provided no new infections are recorded. The outbreak, linked to the cruise ship Hondius that sailed from Ushuaia, Argentina, resulted in 12 confirmed cases, one probable case and three deaths.

More than 650 people who were exposed to infected passengers have been identified in 33 countries and territories. Almost all have completed the required quarantine period; 54 individuals remain under preventive monitoring, which is expected to conclude in the coming days. If the situation remains stable, the WHO will consider the outbreak officially over.

The organization emphasized that scientific work continues, with researchers analysing viral samples to improve diagnostic tools and explore potential treatments or vaccines for future Hanta virus threats.
