Global mental health initiatives focus on community care and suicide prevention
Global health organizations and local governments are intensifying efforts to address mental health challenges following World Mental Health Day. The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued new guidelines advocating for a shift from long-term psychiatric hospitalization toward community-based, rights-centered care models to promote reintegration and dignity.
In Argentina, the province of Buenos Aires has launched an integral plan to combat rising suicide rates, particularly among youth, by expanding 24-hour crisis lines and strengthening hospital emergency services. Meanwhile, medical professionals in Argentina and Spain are calling for a more holistic approach to mental health, emphasizing the need to address socioeconomic factors and advocating for the rational use of psychotropic medications to avoid over-medicalizing social issues.
Addressing the youth demographic, UNICEF and the Global Youth Mental Health Coalition have launched the ‘Turn Down the Noise’ campaign to combat loneliness and the ‘inner noise’ that prevents young people from seeking help. In Spain, medical societies have noted a significant rise in depression among those aged 15 to 29, prompting calls for non-pharmacological therapeutic alternatives.
