WHO and Thailand impose strict quarantine after Hantavirus outbreak on cruise ship

The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a major alert about the Andes Hantavirus after an outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship in April infected 11 people and caused three deaths. The virus, normally spread from rodents, can also be transmitted through human bodily fluids such as saliva, breast milk and semen, raising concerns about limited human‑to‑human spread. No specific vaccine or treatment exists; patients receive supportive care.

In response, Thailand’s Ministry of Health ordered that suspected cases be reported within three hours, diagnostic testing completed within twelve hours, and high‑risk contacts placed under a 42‑day quarantine. Officials warned that the Hantavirus mortality rate can reach 14 % in Asia and Europe and exceed 40 % in the Americas, making it far more dangerous than ordinary flu. Several countries are increasing surveillance of passengers and contacts linked to the cruise outbreak.
