World Health Organization approves inclusion of femicide in ICD-11

The World Health Organization (WHO) has unanimously approved a proposal to include femicide in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). The decision was reached during the WHO's Annual Meeting of the Network of Collaborating Centers for the International Classification Family held in Sydney, Australia.

The proposal, originally presented by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, aims to improve the identification of deaths of women motivated by gender-based discrimination or hate. By including femicide as a specific classification, health records will be able to distinguish these deaths from generic assaults. This change is intended to provide greater statistical visibility to gender-based violence, which often remains hidden in epidemiological systems.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Health, more precise data will allow for better recognition of violence trajectories and will assist in the planning, evaluation, and implementation of public policies for the prevention, care, and protection of women. The WHO recognizes violence against women as a major public health issue and a serious violation of human rights.
