WHO strengthens Ebola readiness and launches new pandemic detection strategy

The World Health Organization (WHO) is intensifying Ebola preparedness efforts across 22 countries and territories within its Eastern Mediterranean region. This initiative focuses on Djibouti, Somalia, and Sudan as priority areas to address vulnerabilities caused by conflict, displacement, and overstretched health systems. Following recent outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, the WHO has conducted assessment missions to evaluate surveillance, laboratory capacity, and emergency coordination.

Separately, the WHO has unveiled a new five-year strategy for its Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence. The strategy aims to empower nations to detect and understand emerging health threats within 24 hours of appearance by the year 2030. Established in 2021 with support from the German government, the Hub works with hundreds of partner organizations and member states to strengthen global health security through rapid pathogen identification and epidemic intelligence.
