WHO pledges enhanced healthcare support for Ghana’s Upper East Region

The World Health Organization (WHO) has pledged to strengthen healthcare delivery in Ghana’s Upper East Region, specifically targeting vulnerable populations. During a visit to the region, WHO Representative to Ghana, Dr. Fiona Braka, met with Regional Minister Akamugri Donatus Atanga to assess local healthcare priorities and challenges.

The initiative focuses on addressing health issues exacerbated by the region’s proximity to the borders of Burkina Faso and Togo. Key areas of concern include disease surveillance, cross-border health collaboration, and improving access to services for marginalized groups, including women and children.

Dr. Braka emphasized that the WHO aims to support Ghana’s national health priorities, such as the Free Primary Health Care initiative and universal health coverage. Regional Minister Atanga noted that the region's geographical location and limited employment opportunities increase the vulnerability of its residents, necessitating targeted interventions and improved infrastructure.
