WHO Africa launches regional health data hub to bolster security

The 76th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, held in Addis Ababa, focused on strengthening continental health security and data management. A central development was the launch of the Regional Health Data Hub (RDHUB), a digital platform designed to centralize fragmented health information across Africa. Utilizing advanced analytics and artificial intelligence, the hub aims to provide real-time epidemiological forecasting and evidence-based decision-making tools for national governments.

Regional leaders emphasized the need for cross-border collaboration to combat health threats. Key initiatives included the formalization of a Cross-Border Collaboration Memorandum of Understanding and the launch of a Mpox vaccine stockpile mechanism. Kenya highlighted the necessity of interoperable systems for real-time data sharing to prevent the spread of crises across borders.

Member states also discussed long-term health sovereignty and sustainable financing. Senegal advocated for regional cooperation in the pharmaceutical industry to reduce dependence on external supplies, while discussions touched upon achieving universal health coverage and improving response readiness for climate-related health emergencies, such as those posed by El Niño.
