WHO Report Links Loneliness to Heart Risk; Aging Signs Signal Health

The World Health Organization reports that one in six people worldwide experience loneliness, which is associated with a 29 % higher risk of coronary heart disease, a 32 % higher risk of stroke, a 16 % increase in overall cardiovascular disease, and a 14‑24 % rise in type 2 diabetes risk.

Separately, researchers highlight practical indicators of healthy ageing. Being able to put on a sock while standing, holding a deep, flat‑footed squat, and maintaining one‑leg balance are linked to better functional capacity. A 2022 British Journal of Sports Medicine study of 1,702 adults aged 51‑75 found that poor one‑leg balance raised mortality risk by 84 % over seven years. Experts note that balance can be improved through regular strength and coordination exercises.
