WHO Report Warns Global Cancer Cases to Reach 350 Million by 2050, Burden Heavier for Developing Nations

The World Health Organization released a report stating that roughly 20 million new cancer cases are diagnosed each year worldwide. If current trends continue, the annual number could rise to about 35 million by 2050.

The surge is linked to longer life spans and lifestyle changes, creating a disproportionate impact on developing countries. In India, average life expectancy has risen from about 31 years in 1950 to around 72 years today, expanding the population at risk. The WHO emphasizes the need for stronger prevention, early detection and treatment capacity in these regions to manage the growing cancer burden.
