WHO Strength‑Training Guideline Met with 40–60 Minutes Weekly
The World Health Organization advises adults to perform muscle‑strengthening activity on at least two days each week, targeting all major muscle groups. Research from Germany’s Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ) and Australia’s Deakin University concludes that a total of 40–60 minutes of short, intense strength training per week can satisfy this recommendation. The analysis, published in Frontiers in Public Health, translates existing literature into practical home‑based programs using body weight, resistance bands or light equipment. Benefits cited include maintained muscle mass and strength with age, improved blood pressure, body composition, bone health and metabolism, and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and premature death. In practice, only about 10‑30 % of adults meet the WHO guideline, with a meta‑analysis estimating roughly 23 % regularly training.
