WHO urges medical evacuations from Gaza to the Netherlands
Humanitarian organizations are calling for the medical evacuation of injured and sick children from Gaza to the Netherlands, citing insufficient regional capacity to provide specialized care.
The World Health Organization (WHO) informed the Dutch House of Representatives that while improving local care is a priority, highly specialized cases still require treatment in Europe. The WHO noted that no hospital or health service in Gaza is currently fully functional.
In response, Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation Sjoerd Sjoerdsma has allocated 12 million euros to support medical services in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, and Egypt. This decision follows advice from the WHO to bolster local healthcare infrastructure.
However, aid groups report significant challenges. Save the Children stated that Egypt lacks the capacity for specialized cases, noting that 2 percent of the 3,000 Gazans they assisted in Egypt could not receive treatment. Doctors Without Borders reported that nearly 20,000 Gazans are currently awaiting medical evacuation.
