WHO warns of mental and oral health challenges in aging population
The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted critical health challenges facing a rapidly aging global population. Projections indicate that by 2030, one in six people worldwide will be aged 60 or older, and the number of individuals aged 80 or more is expected to quadruple to 395 million by 2050.
Regarding mental health, approximately 14.75% of people aged 70 and older suffer from mental disorders, most commonly anxiety or depression. These conditions account for 6.8% of the total years lived with disability in this age group. Experts note that depression in seniors often manifests through apathy, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and social isolation rather than traditional sadness, frequently leading to underdiagnosis.
Physical health concerns also include significant gaps in oral care for seniors, particularly those in long-term care facilities. Issues such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and tooth loss can severely impact nutrition, speech, and overall quality of life. In Mexico, for instance, a high prevalence of dental decay has been observed among residents in long-term care institutions.
