WHO warns of rising global cancer burden and classifies processed meat as carcinogenic

The World Health Organization said more than 90 % of the world’s population will be affected by cancer, either directly or through a family member, and that one in five people will develop the disease in their lifetime. Current figures show 20.6 million new cases and about 10 million deaths each year, with projections of up to 35 million annual deaths by 2050, especially in low‑income countries where survival rates are far lower.

WHO also reaffirmed that processed meats such as ham, sausages, bacon and canned meat are classified as Group 1 carcinogens, linking them to an increased risk of colorectal and other cancers. The agency advises moderating consumption and maintaining a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains to reduce the risk.

Both statements underline the need for stronger prevention strategies, broader access to treatment and continued public‑health campaigns on lifestyle risk factors such as tobacco, alcohol, excess weight and infections.
