WHOOP and Apple expand competition in wearable health metrics

WHOOP and Apple are expanding their competition in the wearable health technology market by integrating advanced physiological metrics and laboratory testing into their respective platforms.

WHOOP has launched its Advanced Labs feature, which aims to provide users with high-level biomarker tracking and analysis previously reserved for elite athletes. This service allows for personalized bio-profiling and real-time diagnosis of health factors, such as systemic inflammation, by utilizing data to measure recovery against an individual's own baseline rather than generalized databases.

Concurrently, Apple has introduced new features with its latest hardware, including a Readiness score that combines activity, training load, vitals, and sleep to advise users on training intensity. Apple is also expanding its health metrics with Health Age, which estimates physiological age using VO2 max, resting heart rate, and HRV. Furthermore, Apple is entering the lab testing space in the US, allowing users to order tests for over 50 biomarkers through Apple Health, a move that directly competes with WHOOP’s integration of lab data via Quest Diagnostics.
