Whoosh high-speed rail sees surge in Malaysian tourists
Malaysian tourists have become the largest group of foreign passengers using the Whoosh high-speed rail service in Indonesia. Data from early September 2026 shows Malaysian travelers purchased an average of 1,150 tickets per day.
Between January and August 2026, PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC) recorded 105,095 Malaysian passengers, accounting for approximately 40% of the 262,369 total foreign passengers during that period. Since the service began operations through August 2026, Malaysian travelers have totaled 403,626, representing 42.8% of all 944,087 foreign passengers.
KCIC General Manager Corporate Secretary Eva Chairunisa stated that the high interest indicates Whoosh is becoming an integrated part of the travel experience in Indonesia, allowing tourists to move quickly and comfortably between Jakarta, Bandung, and various West Java destinations. This growth is supported by collaborations between travel agencies in Malaysia and those in Jakarta and Bandung. KCIC has also conducted sales missions in Kuala Lumpur and Penang to promote the service.
