Why dogs circle before sleep and humans seek a cool pillow

Domestic dogs often spin in circles before lying down. Experts explain that the behavior stems from ancestral wolves that turned over vegetation to create a comfortable, safe sleeping spot and to check for predators. The ritual persists even in modern pets, helping them settle and mark territory with scent.

Humans instinctively look for the cooler side of a pillow when trying to fall asleep. The body must lower its core temperature by 1‑2 °C, a process regulated by the hypothalamus. If the sleeping environment is too warm, the head and face—primary heat‑radiating areas—heat up, prompting a search for a cooler surface to aid the temperature drop needed for sleep.
