Wi-Fi 7 technology introduces speed and latency improvements
The Wi-Fi 7 standard, based on the IEEE 802.11be technical standard, offers significant upgrades over Wi-Fi 6, including 320 MHz channels in the 6 GHz band, 4K-QAM modulation, and Multi-Link Operation (MLO) technology.
MLO allows compatible devices to use multiple frequency links simultaneously, which can improve network stability and performance in congested environments. Additionally, 4096-QAM modulation can increase data transfer rates by up to 20% compared to the 1024-QAM used in Wi-Fi 6 under optimal conditions.
However, realizing these benefits requires full hardware compatibility. While Wi-Fi 7 is backward compatible, devices using older standards like Wi-Fi 6 will not be able to utilize advanced features such as MLO, the full 6 GHz band capabilities, or enhanced Multi-RU with Puncturing. Consequently, users with older smartphones or laptops may not experience the increased speeds or improved coverage provided by new Wi-Fi 7 routers.
